Tips for taking the dog to the snow

Dog in snow

During the winter, many families consider going a few days in the snow, or just have a fun day in a snowy place. In family plans we almost always include the dog, so we have to know what are the tips to take the dog to the snow.

Just as we equip ourselves well to fight the cold, keep in mind that dogs feel it too. You have to bring the things that are necessary for the dogs, since the cold can make them sick, and the humidity is also bad for them. If it is a puppy or a very old dog it is better to avoid taking it to those low temperatures.

The first thing we should do is buy something to protect them. A coat that is for the cold and also waterproof is essential. This is very important when the dog has a fine coat, not suitable for low temperatures. In case of being a Nordic dog, such as Malamutes and Husky, it is not precise, since their coat is insulating and they will not be cold.

Another thing we must protect are their legs. Salt, snow, and ice can damage your delicate pads. In the case of the aforementioned Nordics, they have longer hair to protect, but still sometimes they wear protection on the legs. Today there are boots for dogs, so that the legs are not damaged. It is better to adapt them a few days before so that they do not feel strange with them.

It is important too bring them water at room temperature so they don't eat the snow to quench their thirst, as it may have salt or substances that are bad for them. If we give them water we will prevent them from eating the snow. On the other hand, when returning home it is necessary to dry them well to prevent them from catching cold, even if they are Nordic.
