Top Smells Dogs Hate

Labrador smelling flowers.

As we know, the smell it is the most developed sense of dogs. This means that while some smells such as that of food or that of their own owners are very pleasant, others cause them real repulsion. Although there are no exact rules in this regard, since each dog shows different reactions depending on its characteristics, there are some aromas that these animals generally cannot stand.

1. The perfumes. Unlike humans, dogs reject perfumes, because their scent is too strong for their highly developed sense of smell. In addition, they camouflage the natural smell of their owners, something that dogs hate.

2. Vinegar. Its aroma is very intense, which is why dogs tend to flee from it; in fact, it is one of the key ingredients in making a homemade dog repellent. Although its smell does not harm them, we must avoid that our pets smell it directly.

3. Alcohol. Both alcoholic beverages and cleaning or medicinal alcohol give off a very unpleasant stench for these animals. In addition, its consumption is poisonous for them, as well as its contact with the skin. That is why we should never use alcohol to heal their wounds.

4. Sulfur. This chemical element has come to be used to scare off dogs, something extremely dangerous for them. In fact, this practice is totally prohibited, as breathing it in can seriously harm your health.

5. The chili. Like other spicy foods, chili contains capsaicin, a substance that causes a strong itch in dogs, irritating their eyes, nose and respiratory tract. Of course, we should never allow our pet to eat these foods.

6. Citrus. Some dogs like the smell of citrus, but most of them dislike it. So much so that lemon juice is sometimes used to prevent them from getting close to the plants.

7. Cleaning products. Its aroma is very strong and the nose of dogs is very sensitive, so it is really annoying. For this reason we have to avoid using them in the area where they sleep or eat.

8. Naphthalene. In addition to being very uncomfortable for their smell, this substance is extremely toxic, so we must always keep it out of reach of our pet.
