Puppies when they are born and until they are about six weeks old are protected thanks to colostrum, which is the first milk they will drink. Once there they will give them an antiparasitic, usually in pill form, which will eliminate any internal parasites that they may have. It is very important that they take the medicine between ten and fifteen days before the first vaccination, since otherwise side effects could appear, such as vomiting or diarrhea.
Thus, puppies should receive their first vaccination around six weeks. Thus, they will be protected against distemper and parvovirus, two of the most dangerous diseases in young dogs. But so that they can be more protected, they will also need to receive the boosters, between 2 and 4 weeks after the first vaccination and again after 1 month.
A vaccination schedule could be this:
- 6 to 8 weeks: parvovirus and distemper.
- 8 to 10 weeks: polyvalent (parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and leptospirosis).
- 12 to 14 weeks: reinforcement of the multipurpose.
- 16 to 18 weeks: tracheobronchitis.
- 20 to 24 weeks: rabies.
- Annual: rabies, polyvalent, tracheobronchitis.
Even so, it will be the veterinarian himself who will establish the one he deems most convenient.
